(KNSI) – More Minnesota families struggling with grocery bills will soon be able to get help buying food through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

The program’s income limit will increase on Thursday. Officials say around 1,400 households will become eligible for SNAP benefits or will be able to continue getting assistance, even if their income goes up.

The Minnesota Legislature approved the change during the 2022 session.

For most households, the monthly income limit will rise to 200% of the federal poverty line, up from 165%. Under the new limit, a family of three with an annual income of up to about $46,000 before taxes will be eligible. The change won’t increase the amount of assistance per family but will make it available to more people.

SNAP’s gross income limit increased once before after the 2010 Legislature raised the limit.
