(KNSI) – Local law enforcement is warning parents about putting too much information on social media about their child’s first day of school.
Over the last few years, it has become a rite of passage for some parents to show everyone their little one as they head off to class at the start of the year. Benton County Sheriff Troy Heck says the problem is that everyone can see those pictures.
“You need to remember that you’re sharing this picture with the world. Whatever information you would be uncomfortable with a stranger having, that is the information that you should withhold and keep only for yourself and the people that you’re close to.”
He says there are some things that should never be put in the picture.
“Maybe you shouldn’t be sharing where your child lives or who their teacher is or those kinds of details. That is something somebody might be able to use to track your kid down or might be able to use to get more information about your child than you’d like them to have.”
Classes start August 30th for the St. Cloud Catholic Community Schools and September 7th in the St. Cloud Area School District, Sartell-St. Stephen and the Sauk Rapids-Rice School district.
