(KNSI) – The avian influenza emergency has ended, but its effects are still being felt.
Overall inflation paused in July. However, that was not the case at the grocery store. The rise is mostly in food used at home, not what you purchase at a restaurant. It suggests there is a cap to what consumers are willing to spend except when there is a supply problem.
The most significant contributors are all related to poultry. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the cost of eggs increased by 4.3% in the month and 38% compared to the same time last year. Chicken and turkey meat rose by 17.6% and 12% year-over-year. The rate of change for both was greater than general food inflation at 10.9%.
It creates a problem for consumers, who are caught in a pinch as they try to substitute steak and lobster for cheaper alternatives.
