(KNSI) — A heat advisory is in effect for central Minnesota on Tuesday as a blast of hot air nudges north.

Senior forecaster Joe Calderone with the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Chanhassen says, after a picture-perfect summer day Monday, “We are looking at high temperatures getting up into the mid-90s, but then we are going to add in some pretty good humidity levels, so that’s going to push the heat index values to the low 100s for Tuesday afternoon.”

The heat advisory is posted on Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. as heat index values will climb into at least the low triple digits.

For those who work or do strenuous activities outside, try and reschedule those to the early morning or into the evening, if possible. If not, Calderone says, “ensure you can get yourself into an air conditioned location and get yourselves indoors at any point possible. If you do have to spend time outside, make sure you remain hydrated. Wear light colored clothing and loose clothing. And certainly take extra precautions for children for pets. Do not stay in inside locked cars; especially pets and children because cars can heat up way faster, than just then the outside air temperature. Check on the elderly as well because they’re also very sensitive to those excessively hot temperatures.”

Also, know the signs of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Tuesday night, Calderone warns much of Minnesota is under the threat of severe weather. “There could be another round of some scattered thunderstorms. There is a possibility that some of the storms could be severe. More so east of St. Cloud, east of the of the I-35 corridor, but there’s still a small chance that there could be a few severe thunderstorms Tuesday evening in the St. Cloud area.”

Wednesday into Thursday, we cool a bit, then Calderone adds, “we’ll see highs get back close to 90 for Friday and then on into the weekend.”
