(KNSI) – Operation Dry Water begins today. Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Boating Administrator Lieutenant Adam Block says every agency in the state will be cracking down on bad behavior on the water.
“And we, all of us, want you to know that if you are drinking and boating we will be looking for you. We’ll all be stepping up our efforts to keep our lakes and rivers as safe as they can be. You’ll see more law enforcement personnel on the water. While we may wear different badges, our approach is the same. We have zero tolerance for those boating under the influence,” Block warns.
Alcohol and drugs are the primary factors in a plurality of fatal boating crashes.
“Our goal is that every person who heads out on the water returns home safely at the end of the day. If you’re drinking and boating you don’t share that goal, and you’re putting everybody’s life at risk, including your own. In any given year in Minnesota, nearly half of all fatal boating incidents involve alcohol.”
The initiative involves law enforcement from the federal to local levels. It runs through Monday.
