(KNSI) – Officials with the St. Cloud VA Medical Center are reminding people that while fireworks bring joy to some, they can trigger painful memories for former service members.

Experts say fireworks remind combat veterans of artillery fire and can send painful memories flooding back in the form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. VA Outpatient Mental Health Coordinator Mike Mathies says it can cripple some veterans.

“It varies for each individual. But in some cases, it’s panic. I worked with a gentleman in therapy who talked about sitting with his head between his legs while inside his closet in the basement on a Fourth of July evening.”

He says to talk with neighbors who have been in combat before launching your own fireworks show.

“Because one thing that can help is if somebody’s not surprised. Letting folks know if they’re going to be happening or if you’re willing to put off the fireworks if you have a loved one nearby that this could trigger them.”

If you have a loved one who struggles with the sound of fireworks this time of year, have them sit in a basement with music and a fan to help minimize the sound around them. Another option would be to hang out with friends, play cards or find another activity.

Mathies says the good news is they see people get better. He says some veterans go out and enjoy fireworks with their families, and some veterans didn’t enjoy fireworks, but they do now.

VA officials say services are available for veterans who need help. For help from the VA or to enroll for VA care, click here or call 320-255-6340.
