(KNSI) — Dangerous heat will consume the upper Midwest Monday ahead of the summer solstice.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory until 11:00 a.m. Monday morning. An excessive heat warning kicks in at 11:00 and is in effect until 1:00 a.m. Tuesday. Well above normal, near-record, and record-breaking heat has settled in. Central Minnesota will see high temperatures up to 100 degrees, and high humidity will lead to heat indices into the mid-100s. Western Minnesota is in line to see air temps in the low 100s.

Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly among those working or participating in outdoor activities. Forecasters say to do strenuous outdoor activities in the early morning or later in the evening. Also, watch out when walking pets. Pavement can be 40 to 60 degrees hotter than the air temps, which can burn paws.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles.

Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments to reduce risk during outdoor work. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shady location. OSHA says heat stroke is an emergency, and 911 should be called immediately.

The heat may also result in some roads buckling. A portion of Interstate 35 near Rush City was damaged after a road buckled Sunday afternoon. When a road buckles, the pavement heaves upward, and a normally flat surface will turn into a ramp, sending cars flying. Anyone who sees heat-related damage such as a road buckle or pavement heave should call 911.

The summer solstice is 4:13 a.m. CDT Tuesday.
