(KNSI) — 2022 marks the 76th consecutive year for St. Cloud’s Fireworks celebration, and the board says this year’s honorary Fireworks Commissioner “helps continue the Spirit of 76 – the American Legion Post that started the tradition of St. Cloud’s July 4th Fireworks.”

Dennis Schiffler is a local veteran and member of Buglers Across the Nation. The group is known for playing Taps at other veteran funerals. He is also the rifle squad leader that leads parades, memorial services, and events. He’s also the current Commander of the Waite Park Legion.

Fireworks Board Chairman Jason Bernick describes Schiffler as someone who “represents the tradition and dedication so important to continuing the story of America’s founding.” Bernick adds, “His service in the U.S. military continues today by supporting area veterans and other community events.”

Schiffler says, “for me, and many people, July 4th means fireworks, barbeques, and parades on land and water with flags flying. We live in the greatest country on earth, but not everyone appreciates what we have in America. Many people from other countries want to live here. I know June 14th is Flag Day, but every day should be flag day. Everyone should fly a flag, every day. Be proud of your country and show it, today, on July 4th and every day.”

Honorary Fireworks Commissioners have the honor of pushing the button that begins the pyrotechnics on July 4th. They also represent the Fireworks Committee by riding on the St. Cloud Fire Department’s antique Ahrens Fox Firetruck in the Granite City Days parade on June 25th.

The St. Cloud Area July 4th Fireworks and Celebration are organized and sponsored by the St. Cloud Fireworks Committee, an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) organization. People can contribute to the fireworks display by rounding up a purchase to the nearest dollar at Coborn’s. There is also an event from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Beaver Island Brewing on June 29th.

There will be fun and educational activities for kids of all ages and food vendors in both Hester and Wilson Parks starting at 2:00 p.m. July 4th. Fireworks are scheduled for 10:00 p.m.
