(KNSI) -A small-town police chief with 20 years of service in the local volunteer fire department is hanging up his firehose.

Avon Police Chief Corey Nellis says he feels he’s fulfilled his commitment after being on call for both departments.

“I figured it was time to give one of them up. And I’m not ready to retire from the from the police force yet. So, I felt like the right move for me was to give a younger more energetic person an opportunity to join the fire department and take my place.”

Nellis talked about what he’ll miss most about the fire department.

“It is honestly the social and the camaraderie part of it but, it’s also being able to give back to your community. That’s big for me, especially in small towns. It’s certainly a community need. So, I felt like when I was younger that was the right thing to do.”

He encourages people to take the time to serve their community by volunteering as a firefighter.

He says he’ll fill in his free time by refereeing youth sports, coaching girls hockey and working at Tactical Advantage in Waite Park. Nellis started with the Avon Police Department in 2002 and joined the fire department a short time later.
