(KNSI) — The Minnesota Department of Health is warning consumers not to eat fresh organic strawberries after confirming a link between the fruit and a multi-state outbreak of hepatitis A.
Consumers were urged to throw out strawberries from FreshKampo or HEB brands after linking them with hepatitis A illnesses. Seventeen people have been sickened so far.
The health department identified one case of hepatitis A associated with this outbreak in Minnesota. The person was not hospitalized and has since recovered. After eating strawberries labeled under the FreshKampo name, the person became ill and purchased from Mississippi Market on March 21st.
While the fresh strawberries in focus are no longer in stores, it is possible that consumers have frozen their strawberries and may have this product stored in freezers. Officials urge consumers to check their freezers and discard strawberries from those brands.
Hepatitis A is a contagious liver disease spread through close, personal contact with someone who is infected. To prevent hepatitis A contamination or transmission, consumers should always practice safe food handling and preparation measures.
