(KNSI) – A St. Cloud couple is getting assistance from the Red Cross after a fire damaged their home and killed their cat. Firefighters were called around 6:00 a.m. Tuesday to the 600 block of Riverside Drive Northeast.

The fire department says the married couple’s smoke alarm woke them. The two were able to get out of the home without any injuries. SCFD Chief Matt Love says the fire alarm saved the couple’s lives.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames throughout the home. Crews worked to put the fire out. The fire marshal ruled the fire an accident and said it started on the first floor.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
