(KNSI) – Yard signs in Central Minnesota are helping save the lives of veterans. The St. Cloud VA began handing out the signs last year to raise awareness about a free 24/7 Veterans Crisis Line. VA Suicide Prevention Coordinator Jinae Plumhoff says the signs help break down barriers.
“We handed out 2,500 of them last fall in our communities. And I think that awareness and that visualization helps to decrease the stigma around it and help people to know we’re not alone. People want us to get the help we need.”
KNSI News asked if the yard sign campaign is having a positive result.
“Yes, absolutely. We’ve seen an increase in people calling the Veterans Crisis Line and seeking help, which has been really great.”
She says veterans commit suicide at a 150% higher rate than the general public. The number is 1-800-273-8255 and press one if you are a vet or calling about a vet. There are also treatment options available at the St. Cloud VA.
May is Mental Health Awareness month.
