(KNSI) — The average cost for a gallon of regular unleaded in Minnesota is now over $4.00.

AAA says the state average hit $4.018 Monday morning, a jump of 12 cents in one week. Diesel hit $5.32 a gallon Sunday setting a new record.

Around the St. Cloud area, drivers are paying an average of $3.99 a gallon for regular unleaded, a jump of 17 cents in one week. The cost for a gallon of diesel hit a record $5.39 Monday morning in the St. Cloud area.

The price for a gallon of gas has risen 20 cents in the last two weeks, primarily due to the high cost of crude oil, which was hovering near $100 a barrel last week and is now closing in on $110.

“With the cost of oil accounting for more than half of the pump price, more expensive oil means more expensive gasoline,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson. “These prices are creeping closer to those record high levels of early March.”

Last year at this time we were paying around $2.78 a gallon.
