(KNSI) – Spring weather returns to the St. Cloud area on Thursday, sending people outside and into the path of a common parasite. As the weather warms up, people come in contact with ticks that can spread illnesses such as Lyme disease and Encephalitis.
Department of Natural Resources Lieutenant Mike Martin says there are two common ticks in the region.
“I’m going to take precautions especially in the spring and in the fall in this area. Just because of the number of black legged ticks the deer ticks that we have in this area.”
He recommends using insect repellant with DEET or permethrin to keep ticks away. Martin says ticks have been out for a while this season and they’re looking for more than just people to feed on.
“Anytime that the ground is snow free in an area you’re susceptible to being bitten by a tick this time of year. You need to take precautions not only for yourself but also for your pets.”
Veterinarian Dr. Nancy Cowardin with Companions Animal Hospital says your furry four-legged friend is the tick’s main target.
“I would say most ticks probably prefer to be on dogs. They do have preferred hosts. Ticks wont unattach unless a dog scratches them off. They’re going to want to attach and feed.”
She says the best way to protect your pet is to use a topical or oral tick preventative treatment. Cowardin says tick prevention isn’t a guarantee.
“Even if they’re on tick prevention check them for ticks every day because there is no product that’s 100% effective. So you just have to be really vigilant in our area.”
Thursday’s forecast calls for a high in the 50s with a sunny sky. Temperatures could reach the 70s on Saturday. For more information on dealing with ticks, click here.
