(KNSI) — The man behind the wheel of a minivan that crashed, killing a St. Cloud woman in July of 2020, will have to pay restitution.
The Minnesota State Patrol says 41-year-old Adam Jon Keyser of Hopkins was driving east on Highway 67 in Minnesota Falls Township when he drove off the road, into the ditch, and hit a tree. Keyser and another passenger were both seriously injured. Kasandra Lee Krumm was also hurt and taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where she died. Police say Keyser was under the influence at the time of the crash. Amphetamine, methamphetamine, and THC from marijuana were found in a blood sample. Marijuana and drug paraphernalia were also reportedly found in the van, including a meth pipe and tourniquets.
Keyser was charged in December of 2020 with criminal vehicular homicide and criminal vehicular operation. He pled guilty and was convicted in September of criminal vehicular homicide, and the criminal vehicular operation charge was dismissed. Keyser was sentenced to 45 months in prison and objected to paying more than $6,300 in restitution, saying that it wasn’t part of the plea deal and that the money wasn’t going to go where it should.
The Minnesota Crime Victims Reparation Board asked for the money for Krumm’s family, including funeral-related expenses and counseling. Monday, a judge overruled Keyser’s objection ordering him to pay $6,335.54 in restitution.
