(KNSI) — The first of three homes built by area students is nearly complete.

Groundbreaking is set for Wednesday, April 20th, in the 600 block of 1st Street North in Sartell. The site will soon house a new residence, built as part of a collaboration between Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity and Sartell High School. Habitat’s Executive Director Chad Johnson says there are three different districts taking part.

“We partnered with [St. Cloud] Tech High School, ROCORI High School, and Sartell High School. And we are building a home right at the high school with the instructor and the students at the high school.”

The collaborations allow Habitat for Humanity to increase the number of applicants taking advantage of its affordable housing program. Students are responsible for a majority of the work, overseen by contractors affiliated with Habitat.

“We still serve as the general contractor on the project and we provide supervision and oversight, making sure they have everything they need to build the home. And we’re on sight as needed to help guide them, especially during critical points of the construction process.”

Habitat crews will prepare the foundation, finish the garage and basement, and touch up landscaping at 615 1st Street North. The home is expected to be transported to the lot in May and have an owner by year’s end. The ceremony is scheduled for 3:15 PM.
