(KNSI) — April is being declared Homeless Student Awareness Month by the St. Cloud Area School District 742 Local Education and Activities Foundation. To kick it off, there is a Homeless Student Services Fundraiser.
LEAF Executive Director Bruce Hentges says at any given time in the St. Cloud Area School District; there are between 300 and 500 homeless students. The motto for the fundraiser is, “homework is hard. Imagine how hard it is without a home.” Hentges says, “Whether it’s couch hopping for the senior high student who is on their own for whatever reason, or it’s the elementary students with a single mom who can’t pay the rent, they’re all challenges that kids have to overcome in order to be able to learn and break that cycle when they become adults. It takes a community to raise a child, and we want to do everything that we can.”
Three local couples have pledged a challenge with a dollar-for-dollar match of up to $25,000. The money will go directly to the Homeless Student Services Fund to help with basic school supplies, clothing, food, and crisis housing assistance.
