(KNSI) – School District 742 will pause its policy that prohibits wearing head coverings and hats in school buildings. In a school board meeting Wednesday night, the board unanimously voted to pause the policy due to recommendations from students and staff.
The current policy prohibits headgear, including hats or head coverings, from being worn in the building without the approval of the building principal.
A survey of licensed staff indicated 56% wanted the policy suspended, while 44% supported keeping the policy in place. Students had also shown support to re-evaluate the policy, with hundreds signing a petition. Several students spoke at the meeting in support of pausing the policy.
