(KNSI) — A quick moving band of moderate to heavy, sloppy wet snow is on the way for central Minnesota.
The National Weather Service says areas south of Interstate 94 will see up to an inch of snow. Rain may mix in at times. North of I-94 will likely see one to three inches of snow, with up to four inches possible in some spots. A winter weather advisory starts at 2:00 on Thursday afternoon from Fergus Falls through Brainerd and over to Mora. That is in effect until midnight. Central Minnesota is not under any advisories or warnings.
Snow will move in from the northwest Thursday afternoon. Snow in the St. Cloud area is forecast to begin around the lunch hour or early afternoon. The snow will change over to rain or drizzle in the evening. Temps will drop into the teens Thursday night, leading to refreeze on the roads and sidewalks, upping the potential for some slick spots Friday morning. Then a cold front will come sweeping in behind this system, bringing gusty northwest winds. Gusts up to 45 miles an hour are expected in some areas, especially in western Minnesota. Temperatures are forecast to plunge into the double digits below zero for the low overnight Friday. Windchills are expected to dip to around 15 to 25 degrees below zero for Saturday morning.
Early next week, the area warms back into the 20s and 30s, which is about average for this time of the year.
