(KNSI) – The Minnesota National Guard has been authorized to help Minneapolis and St. Paul in case of civil unrest. Governor Tim Walz issued Executive Order 22-02, authorizing the Minnesota National Guard to provide public-safety assistance in the Twin Cities.
Executive Order 22-02 provides the ability for the Minnesota National Guard to assist local law enforcement if requested. The order comes in the wake of the death of Amir Locke in Minneapolis.
St. Paul formally requested support in preparation for the federal civil rights trial verdict against three former officers for allegedly violating George Floyd’s civil rights.
“Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of Minnesotans, and at the request of the City of Saint Paul, I have authorized the Minnesota National Guard to make preparations to assist local law enforcement agencies as needed,” said Governor Walz. “The National Guard will be available to help keep the peace, ensure public safety, and allow for peaceful demonstrations.”
The governor says the order does not direct the Minnesota National Guard to assume posts throughout the Twin Cities at this time. If needed, the governor says the state will provide more help, including the Minnesota State Patrol.
The order is going into effect immediately.
