(KNSI) – The Stearns County Courthouse played host to Hollywood thirty years ago. In 1992 the courthouse was the backdrop for the opening scenes in Disney’s The Mighty Ducks movie.
The film opened with a courtroom scene shot inside what’s now referred to as the ceremonial courtroom. The movie’s second scene was shot inside the courthouse’s main staircase. Portraits were added to the back of the courtroom and staircase by the filmmakers, and the pictures have remained ever since.
The rest of the moves were shot at various spots around the Twin Cities, including Minneapolis, New Hope, Minnetonka, Coon Rapids, St. Paul, and the former Met Center in Bloomington.
The movie starred Emilio Estevez and was released in October of 1992. According to Stearns County officials, employees would watch out the windows and watch the fans who came walking by. A few locals were even cast as extras.
Stearns County highlighted the day on Twitter as part of the year-long celebration of the courthouse’s 100th anniversary. Construction began on the building started on May 31st, 1921. The courthouse opened on September 1st, 1922.
