(KNSI) – The 2022 Minnesota Legislative session starts today in St. Paul.
Much of the session will involve the state’s $7.7 billion surplus and more than $1 billion in federal aid. St. Cloud mayor Dave Kleis tells KNSI the city is ready to lobby lawmakers on behalf of important projects in the area.
“We’ve got some road projects that we want the state to look at, especially Heatherwood Road. That’s a pretty significant project for us. That’s our top priority”
In addition, redistricting will happen this year. By law, the state’s legislative districts must be redrawn following the census data every ten years. If the state political parties cannot agree on a plan by February 15th, the state supreme court will step in and draw congressional and state legislative boundaries. Kleis says once that process is completed, St. Cloud will redraw its ward boundaries.
“After the 15th, there’ll be the redistricting of legislative boundaries, then we look at where those precincts are, and how the precincts fall within that legislative district. And then we also redraw the lines for the wards so that they’re equal in population.”
The redistricting process is very public. A town hall meeting on redistricting will be held on February 10th at the Whitney Senior Center.
