(KNSI) – A domestic assault suspect is under arrest after allegedly leading police on a chase and engaging them in a brief standoff near the St. Cloud Regional airport Sunday night.
According to police, everything started about 6:20 p.m. when they spotted the suspect who was wanted for a domestic assault warrant out of Becker near the 1200-block of 6th Avenue South. They say he would not stop for officers and led them on a chase on Highway 10, starting near Highway 23 in St. Cloud. Speeds at times reached 80 miles an hour.
The suspect went off the road and became stuck in a snowbank near Sherburne County Road 3 (32nd Street SE) and County Road 7 (45th Ave SE), about a mile south of the airport. The chase lasted about seven miles. Police say the suspect, who was allegedly armed with a sword or a large knife, refused to get out of the car. The suspect was allegedly threatening to harm himself. Investigators believe the suspect was under the influence of drugs.
The press release says officers negotiated with the man for around an hour and a half before breaching a window and deploying a pepperball round and pepper spray. Police say the man was taken to St. Cloud Hospital to be treated for minor superficial self-inflicted injuries before being booked into jail. He’s being held on suspicion of domestic assault, fleeing police in a motor vehicle, obstructing the legal process and 4th degree DUI.
One officer suffered minor injuries from the incident and didn’t require medical attention. KNSI News doesn’t release the name of suspects until they’re formally charged.
