(KNSI) – Minnesota’s COVID-19 infection rate is the highest in the nation. Minnesota Department of Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm talked about the situation during Tuesday’s media briefing.

“Minnesota is now the fastest growing COVID hotspot in the country based on the number of cases that we have per 100,000 people. And we’ve passed another grim milestone of 9000 deaths from COVID 19.”

Officials reported 51 new deaths to raise the state’s total to 9,047 lives lost since the start of the pandemic in early 2020. Commissioner Malcolm says hospital capacity has gotten event tighter since last week’s update.

“Currently, Minnesota has 1,348 COVID patients hospitalized including 307 in the ICU. These are numbers that we haven’t seen since late December of last year.”

She says COVID-19 is considered widespread in every county in Minnesota except Lake of the Woods. MDH officials are begging Minnesotans to get vaccinated and get a booster shot if they’re eligible. Minnesotans age five and older can get a COVID vaccine.

Healthcare officials also want Minnesotans to wear masks in public, wash their hands frequently, and stay six feet apart from others.
