(KNSI) – Officials are warning that the number of COVID-19 cases is surging in Minnesota. Department of Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm says COVID-19 hospitalizations have reached their highest level of the year.
“Right now, we find ourselves in a really truly alarming spike in cases and in more recent days. Every day now, we’re seeing dozens of Minnesotans dying from an illness that they didn’t have to get.”
She says hospital capacity continues to tighten across the state. Malcolm urges Minnesotans to use prevention tools, including vaccinations, masking in public, and staying home when sick.
“We need all Minnesotans to recognize the fact that in a pandemic storm like this one caused by the Delta variant individual decisions have implications not only for the person but for their families, their communities, in fact, the entire state.”
The Minnesota Department of Health on Wednesday reported 5,277 new cases and 43 new deaths. As of Wednesday, Minnesota hospitals were caring for 1,159 COVID-19 patients, including 257 in intensive care.
