(KNSI) – An 8-year-old Cold Spring Elementry student was hit by a car while walking from school on Tuesday. The accident was reported around 3:15 p.m. near Fifth Avenue North and Fifth Street North in Cold Spring.

The Cold Spring/Richmond Police Department says southbound traffic on Fifth Avenue has stopped near the intersection due to congestion at the round-a-bout. As the student crossed Fifth Avenue in-between vehicles, they were hit by a car traveling north.

Police were assisted by Mayo ambulance, who treated the child for minor injuries. The student was released to a parent at the scene.

Police say no citations were issued because the child was not using a crosswalk and popped out in front of the car without the driver having enough time to stop. Police Chief Jason Blum says he’s extremely grateful the accident wasn’t any worse.
