(KNSI) – Saturday is the 20th anniversary of the September 11th Terroristic attacks on America. The strike on the World Trade Center in New York led to the collapse of the twin towers.

A piece of the actual tower is encased in a monument on display in Rockville. Stearns History Museum Head Archivist Steve Penick says the monument started when Rockville area residents got together to make a veteran’s memorial.

“Then it grew to include firefighters and law enforcement. So, the parameter got a little bigger—the veterans, law enforcement, firefighting, and the 911 Memorial combined.”

The group heard about a Boy Scout in Florida who got a piece of the towers for an Eagle Scout project.  Penick says the group decided to do the same thing.

“The committee sent an email to the New York Port Authority asking if they can have a piece of the building as well. And there were like 1,300 requests for this. And Rockville was one of them to get it.”

The 1,000 LBS tower piece was placed into the monument and dedicated in September 2016. The project cost $70,000 and was paid for with donations.
