(KNSI) — The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows that even with the latest rainfall, the state’s dry conditions show no signs of waning, but there is some good news.
The latest figures show 57.65% of the state in extreme or exceptional drought. That’s up from 49.77% last week, but the silver lining is that just over 8% of the state is in exceptional drought, which is no change from the August 17th report.
Eastern Stearns, all of Benton and Sherburne, and most of Meeker, Morrison, and Wright Counties fall into the extreme drought category.
There is also more good news on the horizon.
The National Weather Service says rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected across the area between Thursday and Saturday. Local drought-stricken areas in the five-county St. Cloud area could see two to three inches of rain. Southern Wright County is in line for three to four inches of rain.
