(KNSI) – Extra DWI patrols start Friday on Minnesota’s roads and highways.
The Department of Public Safety says its campaign to get impaired drivers off the roads (which will include extra patrols, awareness and education) will last through Labor Day, which the department says is the holiday with the third-highest number of DWI arrests per hour on average.
From January 1st to August 16th, 2021, state law enforcement has recorded 15,154 DWIs, up from 14,349 recorded by that date in 2020. Though DWI arrests and drunk driving deaths have declined over the past decade, those figures have bumped up amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
DPS says the consequences of a DWI arrest include fines, losing your driver’s license for up to a year and possible jail time.
