(KNSI) – A tribute to military men and women is being worked on in Central Minnesota.
Big Lake will be home to one of nearly 100 Freedom Rocks painted by artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen.
Sorensen started painting the mural on the large rock this week, and it should be completed next week.
“I want to visualize or illustrate for people, the service and sacrifice of our veterans. And that’s kind of what the goal is. Tell the story through illustration.”
He says every mural is different, but all have at least one thing in common.
“Over all of my freedom rocks, I have an American flag. So for me, the American flag represents all veterans, past, present future, and so that the American flag will be you know, rolling over the top of the rock.”
Big Lake’s Freedom Rock will feature a soldier dealing with PTSD, a local sailor lost on the USS Cyclops, an eagle with a Purple Heart in its claws, and something to honor women in the military.
Big Lake will hold a dedication ceremony for Freedom Rock on September 18 at Jefferson Square Park-Veterans Memorial west of McDonald’s.
