(KNSI) – What’s next for Derek Chauvin now that he’s been sentenced for the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Judge Peter Cahill ruled against a new trial shortly before sentencing the former Minneapolis Police Officer to 22.5 years in prison on Friday.

Bradshaw and Bryant Law Firm Managing Partner Mike Bryant says there’s no doubt Chauvin’s attorney will file an appeal.

“Well, the judge’s ruling concerning the no new trial, and also the other issues that he looked at already are all things that were being set up for the appeal. So the defense is going to go ahead with their appeal.”

Bryant had a prediction for a cryptic message that Chauvin gave just before his sentence was handed down.

“Chauvin said something interesting in his statement when he said, ‘You know, you’re soon going to hear some information that’s going to give you some comfort.’ I was puzzled by what that could be. But I think it potentially could be is that he’s going to take a federal deal. So he ends up in federal prison. And that’ll supersede everything, and the appeals will go away, and everything will go away. And that will be what deal he takes with the feds.”

Chauvin and three other officers face federal charges for allegedly violating Floyd’s civil rights when he was killed in May 2020.

The three other officers are scheduled to go to trial in State Court for aiding and abetting in Floyd’s death in March.
