(KNSI) – At least one person is dead after a car drove into a crowd of protesters in Minneapolis’s Uptown neighborhood.

Witnesses at the scene said an SUV was driving at a high rate of speed and seemed to accelerate as it drove toward the crowd around midnight. The SUV allegedly hit a parked car that had blocked off one of the lanes at the intersection of Lake Street and Girard Avenue. That car then hit some people. The car was believed to be there to protect those who had gathered.

Police believe the driver, who witnesses reportedly detained before police arrested them, may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

People had taken to the streets after a rally on top of the parking ramp where police killed Winston Boogie Smith Junior in an alleged shootout out on June 3rd.
