(KNSI) – A St. Cloud man appeared in court on Friday on charges connected to a shooting last month near Sartell.

Trenell Earl Rogers was charged with one felony count of first-degree assault with a firearm, one felony count of second-degree assault with a gun, and one felony count of illegally possessing a firearm.

According to the criminal complaint, the 34-year-old became upset with the victim, 57-year-old Alex Mallet, of Sartell, on May 25 after Mallet allegedly called Rogers a “bitch” for having a rose-colored cell phone.

Rogers is accused of shooting Mallet in the neck in the 32000 block of River Oaks Lane in LeSauk Township.

Mallett was taken to St. Cloud Hospital, where medical personnel performed life-saving surgery.

Authorities were unable to find the gun, but they did recover the cell phone.

Rogers was arrested on Thursday in rural Morrison County.

According to court records, Rogers has a prior conviction for first-degree aggravated robbery, second-degree assault, and domestic assault,

His next court hearing is June 9.
