(KNSI) – The St. Cloud man accused of running from police and threatening officers with a hatchet is now charged with three felonies.
A woman at a home on the 400 block of 2nd Street Southeast called police about 11:25 a.m. on May 21st to say as she was breaking up with her ex-boyfriend, Malique Isiah Shaqur Hanson, had used a knife to slash the tires on her car. She says Hanson also smashed her car’s windshield before leaving the scene on foot.
Police say they found Hanson by the railroad tracks on the east side of town, and as they approached, they say he had a hatchet with him. According to the criminal complaint, he allegedly made motions with the hatchet as if to threaten the officers that he was going to throw it at them. The criminal complaint says police continued to follow Hanson, and he continued to make the throwing motions.
Two area schools were put on lockdown during the ordeal, and officers say Hanson ran through the playground at Lincoln Elementary. Division Street was also blocked off.
Officers were able to surround Hanson, and one of them deployed their Taser, causing Hanson to drop the hatchet.
Hanson was arrested and has been charged in Benton County with second-degree assault, threats of violence, criminal damage to property, and misdemeanor obstruction.
