(KNSI) – A 31-year-old man from Monticello and his three-year-old passenger are dead following a crash in South Dakota Monday afternoon.

The Highway Patrol says the man was driving his Honda Odyssey minivan east on Interstate 90 near Kimball when a wheel flew off a trailer being pulled by a man driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck. The wheel crossed the median and hit the Honda, killing the driver and the child. A 24-year-old Monticello woman in the minivan suffered life-threatening injuries. An 11-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries. The driver of the pickup truck was not hurt.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety says the information is considered preliminary and the investigation is ongoing. No names have been released.
