(KNSI) — Two teen girls are recovering after an ATV crash late Saturday morning.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office says they were called to the 34000 block of Westfield Road, about three miles north of Melrose just before noon. When they arrived, rescuers learned the 17-year-old driver of a side-by-side utility vehicle was going west and failed to negotiate a curve and lost control. The vehicle rolled end over end in the ditch, partially trapping her.

She had to be cut free by the fire department and was then airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis. The 16-year-old passenger was also hurt. She was taken to Melrose Hospital by ambulance for treatment of serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

Investigators say neither girl was wearing a seatbelt or a helmet.

The crash remains under investigation.
