(KNSI) — The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an Air Quality Alert for today due to ozone pollution.
Ground-level ozone is expected to be high on Tuesday afternoon in central Minnesota. Mostly sunny skies, warm temperatures, and low humidity will create favorable conditions for pollutants to react with sunlight and produce ground-level ozone.
The alert is in effect between noon and 9:00 p.m.
The Air Quality Index is expected to reach the orange, or unhealthy for sensitive groups, category. That includes people with lung disease such as asthma, heart disease, children and older adults, and anyone who is active outdoors. Those people should limit their time outside or heavy exertion.
The MPCA is asking the public to reduce or eliminate activities that contribute to air pollution, such as outdoor burning and the use of residential wood-burning devices, and to reduce vehicle trips and idling as much as possible.
