(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is set to launch a new licensing system for hunters, anglers and boaters, which will be planned in two phases.
“The Minnesota DNR is excited to introduce a modern licensing system designed to improve the experience for Minnesotans and visitors alike,” said DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen. “The new system will allow users to enjoy more outdoor opportunities through convenient, flexible and user-friendly tools.”
Starting Tuesday June 9, Phase 1 of the new system will allow outdoor enthusiasts to purchase licenses and permits through a new DNR mobile app or in person from a licensing agent. Users can then download their licenses to a mobile device for instant use or print a physical paper copy. While cell service will be necessary to download the app, it will not be required to store and display purchased licenses and permits.
Phase 2 will allow hunters to validate and register harvests via the app or on paper through a licensed agent. Physical harvest tags will also no longer be required.
The existing licensing system will be in use until 11:59 p.m. June 1, when all information from the old system will begin being moved to the new one, including purchased licenses. During this transition, fishing license sales will be paused, and anglers may fish without a license starting midnight June 2 through 11:59 p.m. June 8.
The DNR will post updates about the new system on its website here.
