(KNSI) — Nursing home residents in Minnesota will soon be able to raise a glass together, thanks to a bill signed into law Tuesday by Governor Tim Walz.

The new law updates the state’s liquor licensing rules, including a provision allowing nursing homes and assisted living facilities to serve alcohol to residents. Walz says living in a care facility shouldn’t mean giving up everyday freedoms, including the ability to get together for happy hour.

The liquor bill was one of five bipartisan measures Walz signed Tuesday.

Two expand support for veterans and their families. One updates educational assistance for veterans’ spouses and children, and another tightens eligibility for state-funded veterans benefits. A fourth bill streamlines energy infrastructure permitting to help speed up the development of transmission lines. The fifth clarifies options for homeowners navigating mortgage foreclosure proceedings.

Meanwhile, lawmakers are working against the clock — the legislature has until May 18th at midnight to finish its work.
