(KNSI) – Work is underway on a $12.9 million renovation of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on the St. Cloud State University campus.
The hockey arena will be closed to the public until construction is completed. The project will reduce ice sizes for both hockey rinks, replace a failing cooling plant and make updates to the facility. Work is expected to be completed by the start of the SCSU men’s and women’s hockey seasons this fall.
The upgrades are funded through Higher Education Asset Preservation and Replacement funds appropriated by the state legislature. HEAPR funds are awarded for the maintenance and preservation of existing facilities across Minnesota State’s seven universities and 26 colleges.
SCSU President Dr. Gregory Tomso said the investment will benefit both the university and the surrounding community. “I want to thank representative Dan Wolgamott, representative Bernie Perryman and senator Aric Putnam for their legislative support in making this long-needed project a reality,” Tomso said. “These upgrades will ensure the facility remains a fixture in the community for generations to come.”
