(KNSI) — A free hands-on event aimed at connecting rural Minnesota students with healthcare careers is coming to St. Cloud later this month.

The Minnesota Medical Association and the University of Minnesota Medical School CentraCare Regional Campus are hosting Rural Youth Medical Careers Discovery Day on April 18th in St. Cloud. The full-day event, open to kids ages nine and older, is presented in collaboration with the Minnesota Rural Health Association and the University of Minnesota Pre-Health Student Resource Center.

Students will have the chance to try activities like the Cast and Splint Challenge, a Junior Surgeon Lab, and a suturing skills lab, among others. Parents and guardians will also get information on how to support their children’s interest in healthcare careers.

Minnesota Medical Association President Lisa Mattson, M.D., says most students only interact with physicians and other healthcare professionals during appointments, making the event a unique chance to learn what pursuing a medical career actually looks like.

Jill Amsberry, D.O., assistant dean of undergraduate medical education at the St. Cloud campus, says the goal is to help rural students see themselves in healthcare settings early, so those possibilities feel attainable.

The Minnesota Medical Association is the state’s oldest and largest professional association for physicians, residents, and medical students, with more than 10,000 members.
