(KNSI) — Central Minnesota is bracing for back-to-back winter weather systems this week, with the National Weather Service issuing a winter weather advisory for our area ahead of what could be a messy stretch through the weekend.

The first round gets underway on Wednesday afternoon and continues into Thursday, bringing a sloppy mix of precipitation types to the region. Forecasters say rain, snow, sleet, and freezing rain are all likely. Central and western Minnesota can expect up to two to four inches of snow, while far southeastern Minnesota will see mostly rain. Areas in between face a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain. Forecasters say Thursday morning’s commute is expected to be tricky.

A second system moves in on Friday and continues through Saturday night. Snow and rain are again the primary precipitation types expected, with snow most likely across western and central Minnesota, especially during the morning and overnight hours. Rain becomes more likely in the south and east.

Meteorologists say to monitor the forecast closely through the week because small changes in each system’s track could change what type of precipitation falls and totals for any given area.
