(KNSI) – A blighted turkey processing plant in downtown Melrose is getting a second life thanks to a state redevelopment grant.
The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development announced $669,700 for the city as part of a larger $2.08 million package distributed to five communities across the state.
The money will go toward demolishing existing structures and making public infrastructure improvements on the 4.06-acre downtown site. Plans call for converting part of the property into a 20,800-square-foot warehouse with loading docks.
City officials and the developer will also contribute matching funds to the project, which is expected to attract $604,600 in private investment, nearly a dollar of private money for every dollar in public support.
When complete, the project is projected to create five new jobs, retain nine existing positions and add $27,380 to the local tax base.
The funding comes through DEED’s Redevelopment Grant Program, which is designed to help Minnesota communities clear out blighted properties and upgrade infrastructure for more productive use, whether industrial, residential or commercial.
