(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is calling on area homeowners to take down bird feeders and inspect their properties for food sources that could draw bears.
In the last five years, bear sightings have increased in Stearns, Benton and Sherburne counties, with some even reported inside St. Cloud city limits. There have also been sightings around Sartell, Becker, Big Lake and Duelm.
Minnesota wildlife officials warn that the hanging food for songbirds can quickly become bear feeders as some adults begin leaving their dens in search of easy, high-calorie meals. While most female bears with cubs and yearlings are still close to their denning areas, some full-grown bears have begun to emerge.
As bears emerge from hibernation over the coming weeks, their metabolism gradually ramps up. They transition from nibbling on plants to eating more substantial meals. Bears can detect food scents from more than a mile away, making it essential for homeowners to eliminate attractants before problems arise.
The DNR recommends residents remove bird feeders when bears are active, secure food, garbage and recycling, never feed or approach a bear, never leave pet food outdoors, clean and store grills and smokers, and alert neighbors to bear activity.
