(KNSI) – St. Cloud firefighters rescued residents in an apartment fire that has left around 50 people without a place to stay.

Firefighters were called to the 3100 block of Maine Prairie Road just after 4:00 a.m. on Saturday. According to the fire department’s critical incident report, flames had spread to the second and third floors, trapping multiple people.

The department deployed ladders to the upper floors to free the trapped residents. Other occupants were trapped inside the interior of the building as well.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze on the second and third floors, as well as in the attic and roof where the fire had spread. Due to the damage, the entire structure was deemed uninhabitable.

The Red Cross is working with St. Katharine Drexel School to provide emergency shelter in the gymnasium. The fire department stated early morning fires like this show how important working smoke alarms can be.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the fire marshal.
