(KNSI) – With the latest blast of winter weather wrapping up, the City of St. Cloud is reminding property owners of their obligation to keep public sidewalks clear of snow and ice, or pay up.

Under St. Cloud ordinances, property owners must remove snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property within 24 hours after a snowfall ends. The requirement applies to the full width of the sidewalk on all sides of a property.

Failure to comply carries a financial consequence. If a property owner does not clear their sidewalk within the required timeframe, the City may step in to do the work and bill the property owner for the cost of that service. The cost starts around $160, with a $75 administrative fee plus $85 per hour for removal.

Simply shoveling snow is not enough. Residents are expected to clear ice down to bare concrete and treat remaining slick surfaces with salt or sand as needed. Property owners with corner lots carry an additional responsibility. They must clear the curb cuts at corners and crosswalks all the way to the street gutter to accommodate people with disabilities.

According to the Public Works Department, keeping sidewalks passable benefits the entire community, particularly children walking to school, seniors, and individuals with mobility challenges who depend on clear, safe pedestrian routes.

City officials are also asking residents who plan to travel or be away from home during winter months to make prior arrangements for someone to maintain their sidewalk in their absence.

For more information, contact the City of St. Cloud or visit the city’s official website.
