(KNSI) – Drivers who regularly travel 22nd Street South need to be on the lookout for flaggers who will be directing traffic along a stretch of the roadway starting Thursday.

Intermittent lane closures are expected between Cooper Avenue South and Oak Grove Road/County Road 136 to accommodate planned tree removal work in the area. The closures will remain in effect through early March.

It’s in preparation for road construction slated for this spring and summer. The $6.6 million project will include new curb and gutter, storm drainage systems, bicycle lanes, and sidewalks. The reconstruction will also include installing a water main transmission line and upsizing the water distribution main to meet the needs of St. Cloud’s growing southern neighborhoods.

Flagging operations will be limited to the active work zone whenever possible, though activity may be stopped and started depending on where crews are working at any given time. The contractor has committed to minimizing traffic impacts, but delays are still possible during work hours.

While two-way traffic will be maintained throughout the project, officials are encouraging motorists to seek an alternate route if possible to avoid potential slowdowns.

Drivers are asked to slow down, pay attention to flagger instructions, and exercise caution when passing through the work zone.
