(KNSI) – The Initiative Foundation is expanding its Initiators Fellowship program to strengthen social enterprise across rural Minnesota.

The program can grow, thanks to a $4.2 million multi-year grant from the Bush Foundation and continued support from founding partner Granite Partners. The expansion transforms the Fellowship beyond its original two-year cohort model into a statewide resource system-creating what organizers say is a unique national model for supporting social entrepreneurs in rural communities.

The Fellowship provides participants with leadership development, executive mentoring, entrepreneurial education, dedicated staff support and a $30,000 annual stipend during the two-year program.

It’s already produced notable results in the St. Cloud area. Hudda Ibrahim drew upon her Fellowship experience to support cross-cultural understanding and civic leadership. She now serves as a St. Cloud City Council member and executive director of OneCommunity Alliance.

Nora Hertel’s Project Optimist focuses on solutions journalism, sharing community-centered stories that connect residents with practical ways to address local challenges.

Eighteen Fellows have graduated from the program since its inception. Nine Fellows are set to graduate from the 2024-2025 cohort in December.
