(KNSI) – All February long, state officials are asking Minnesotans to take part in the ‘Shop Local, Stand Together’ campaign in the face of interruptions to commerce from raids by federal agents.

Governor Tim Walz and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development are encouraging residents to support small, locally owned businesses, particularly those that have seen a drop in customers due to heightened fear and uncertainty.

Greater St. Cloud President and CEO NeTia Bauman told KNSI news that their agency focuses on regional economic development year-round and supports any measure focusing on locally owned businesses. “Anytime that there’s a coordinated effort to encourage people to shop local and support Main Street and small businesses, I think it’s a positive step for economic resilience and community vitality.”

She says local shops create jobs, generate activity, and keep dollars circulating in the community. Bauman believes consistent foot traffic is essential to local shops’ survival. “It helps them plan, invest, and stay rooted right here in central Minnesota. And that benefits everyone. Our local businesses really help define the character of our communities.”

Bauman acknowledged that people moving to the area from abroad are opening stores and trying to live the American Dream. “There’s certainly been an increase not only in general demographics, but in immigrant-led small businesses and organizations.”

Since December, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have been conducting operations in the St. Cloud area. Their activity has led to some ethnic restaurants across the region temporarily closing their doors, typically when agents visit or attempt to enter the establishments.
