(KNSI) – The City of Melrose is receiving $50,000 from the state to invest in contamination cleanup at a former turkey processing plant, paving the way for a downtown redevelopment project.
The grant, announced Tuesday by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, will fund environmental work on the 7.3-acre site. Plans call for redeveloping the property into housing, warehouse and loading dock facilities, and a street extension.
The project is expected to create three new jobs and increase Melrose’s local tax base by $41,300. The city will provide matching funds for the investigation work.
Melrose is one of 13 communities across Minnesota sharing more than $6 million in grants to help turn polluted sites into economic opportunities. The grants cover up to 75% of costs to assess and clean up polluted sites for redevelopment. The funds will help create another 1,500 housing units throughout the state.
